The Museum of Counterfeiting was created in 1951 by the Union of Manufacturers in a mansion located at 16 rue de la Faisanderie. By a curious coincidence, the building itself was the exact copy of a seventeenth-century hotel that was in the Marais district, and has since been destroyed. Since its creation, the Counterfeit Museum is constantly updating its collections and to endorse an educational role.
