The picturesque village of the ancient Volcei, coinciding with today's Buccino, stands on the plateau that surrounds the Sele valley, enjoying a strategic position that has made the city the object of settlements since prehistoric times, reaching its maximum development in the Roman period, becoming the seat of minucipium and giving birth to Bruzia Crispina, future wife of the Emperor Commodus. The medieval city, of which the castle is its symbol, was then subsequently rebuilt on the remains of the Roman city, which became the basis for the current city, which therefore rests on a stratification of the urban fabric belonging to different periods of the city's history. This stratification has allowed the construction of an Urban Archaeological Park, unique in its kind, which offers visitors an evocative route through the various sites that make up the historic center. The Volcei National Archaeological Museum collects all the precious materials and testimonies come to light during the archaeological excavation, preserving precious gold jewels inside, the oldest tessellated mosaic of Italian peninsular, and three vases signed by the ceramographer beat Assteas. The city of Buccino, still half-known on the tourist level, will leave visitors amazed by how much a small village in the Campania hinterland can actually preserve many wonders, making it an archaeological center of the first order.
