Muzeul Theodor Aman

On C.A. Rosetti Street, at 8, we encounter a secluded building in Bucharest's urban landscape, which houses the "Theodor Aman" Museum, the first museum of art in the capital, officially opened on 16 June 1908.

The eclectic building, influenced by the French neo-classical architecture, displays in the upper part elements of decoration that remind the Greek temple (the strong cornice, the suggestion of the denticles, the Greek meander, the frontoanes marked by the acroters which make up the window coronations), as well as the elements that are claimed in the Florentine Renaissance (almost cubic volumetry, like that of the Florentine palaces, symmetry of the main façades, niches with statues on the northern façade, the presence of medals and decorative discs).

It is the house where he lived and created for nearly 22 years Theodor Aman (1831 - 1891), who conceived every detail of this true "art temple" from the architectural project implemented by the German entrepreneur Fr . Scheller between 1867 and 1869, to the exterior and interior decoration (stained glass, mural painting, carved medals on doors, painting on doors, carved furniture, wall paneling and stoves, stucco ceilings).
