Initially, the Geological Museum of the Polish Academy of Sciences (ING PAN) has been collecting geological collections since 1865, initially by the Physiographic Commission created at the Cracow Scientific Society and then by the Geological Department of the Academy of Arts. After the creation of the Polish Academy of Sciences in 1954, the geological part of the collection was found in the Geological and Stratigraphic Laboratory, which originates from today's Research Center and Museum.

Today, the Museum still collects collections of several geology divisions, namely: palaeontological collections (including palaeobotanical), mineralogical collections (including collections of Antoni Waga and Ignacy Domeyi from South America - 19th century) and lithologies in Poland a collection of 333 specimens of meteorites) which are available for research and popularization purposes.
