The origin of the square is to be traced back to the late 13th century, when the Da Polenta family became a master of the city. The political center became the residence of Bernardino da Polenta, which the nobleman had built on the remains of an ancient palace built on the bank of Padenna, the city river. The Bernardino House is not to be confused with the Domus Magna of the Da Polenta family, which was a few hundred meters further south, in the present street G. Mazzini.
