If you have ever heard of Croatia, you've heard of Dubrovnik, for sure. Even if you have never heard of Dubrovnik, you have certainly heard of a famous TV show, The Game of Thrones. Many famous scenes from Game of Thrones were filmed right there. This is one of the most preserved medieval cities in Croatia and because of that, it is on the UNESCO list. One of the symbols of this city is its street called Stradun. Walking down this famous street in Dubrovnik, you will see just a small part of this gorgeous place. And Stradun in Dubrovnik will definitely surpass your expectations.

Now that I have your attention, I would like to tell you more about Stradun. It is the local name for the Placa street, from Italian Strada which means „street“. It represents the main street in Dubrovnik and goes from the Old Town main entrance at Ploče to the second main entrance Pile. Stradun looks like an enormous square made of white marble with houses in the Renaissance style. The legend says that the two nations, wanting to protect themselves, buried the canal between their two towns Ragusa and Dubrava, and that is how Dubrovnik came into existence, and at the site of the strained canal Stradun. Today, you can hear a few different stories about the emergence of this street, but this is my favorite one. Unfortunately for this town, in 1667, a big earthquake hit the city, and about 5000 people lost their lives. Soon after that, a fire hit the city. In that two accidents, many buildings in Stradun disappeared or were seriously damaged. Because of that, today you can hear an interesting story that all new buildings are made with the kitchen upstairs because of the fire, as it is harder for the fire to go down then upwards. You can imagine what was the life of a housewife back then.

When at Stradun, you can find your many perfect places somewhere in the side streets. There are so many small and not so small restaurants, coffee shops, places where you can enjoy at any time of the day. Try some of the local wines, fine dishes or great coffee. Even for the locals, there is always something new in this city. And while enjoying the warm sun with a glass of white wine, you will testify to the longevity of one city and one story. In front of you, many spirits of past centuries will appear. You will feel that amazing energy that this city and this street have. Unquestionably you will feel like you are walking down a huge open-air museum.

Once you visit Dubrovnik, you become a part of the history and walking down Stradun will make you feel an incredible moment where the past meets the present. Stradun in Dubrovnik will surpass your expectations, but don't let it impress you too much. Leave a bit of the excitement for the next visit as well.
