Being Greek, I’ve many times found myself in conversations where I’ve been constantly asked by international people to provide them with info about the “hidden” and not touristic islands that are worth-visiting while in Greece. The options of where to go in Greece are seemingly endless, and they all look great. Milos is a volcanic Greek island in the Aegean Sea and specifically it is said to be the south-westernmost island in the Cyclades group. The island is famous for the statue of Aphrodite (the "Venus de Milo", that can be now found in the Louvre), and also for statues of the Greek god Asclepius (now in the British Museum), the Poseidon and an archaic Apollo in Athens. Milos is a popular tourist destination during the summer.
Only a two-hour ferry ride from Santorini and a 40-minute flight from Athens, for a long time, Milos was overlooked as a tourist destination due to its traditional mining industry. However, nowadays, due to its volcanic activity in ancient years, Milos has been endowed with an exciting variety of gorgeous landscapes, offering the visitor a wide range of activities. The shapes of the rocks and their wonderful colours at the beautiful white sandy beaches are one expression of the volcanic features of Milos.
All this geological munificence has produced crystals, solidified volcanic ash and streaks of oxidised metals that make you feel you are in a place that has been dreamed up rather than naturally evolved.
With more than 80 amazing beaches, unique lunar landscapes, rocky secluded caves, mysterious catacombs, “sleeping” volcanoes and a picturesque city centre, Milos can be considered as the ideal destination for a perfectly romantic holiday! Important to be mentioned, the beaches in Milos distinguish for their unique natural beauty and gorgeous water!
Before concluding this page, I really had to include some info about the most photographed spot of the whole island, the beach of Sarakiniko. Considered as one of the most beautiful and most particular beaches of the island, Sarakiniko offers a landscape which is very impressive and surely unforgettable! The entire landscape formed by the volcanic rocks doesn't show any signs of vegetation and is coloured entirely in a bright white, which makes an interesting contrast with the deep blue and turquoise of the surrounding waters. This amazing scenery gives one the impression of standing on the surface of the moon. Since it’s not easy for you to picture it, just have a look at the pictures that follow… I’m telling you, the views are just breathtaking!
