Cities in the northern areas of England are normally fairly quiet and local, or they are a little bit grey and grim, but I'm very happy to report that Newcastle is absolutely not one of these grey or grim northern cities. I previously wrote about culture in Newcastle, and said that I found Newcastle to be surprisingly beautiful, cultural and modern. In this article I'm going to continue the exploration of this often unvisited-by-tourists city, and show you some of the cool and fun bars it has to offer.

Lola Jeans

If you are spending an evening or afternoon in Newcastle, and find yourself thinking "I wonder if there are any bars here that are really laid-back, have a great vintage style, and serve great drinks"... Well then I would definitely recommend checking out Lola Jeans. It's the kind of bar where you feel a little bit transported into the past. So many bars now are nervous about bringing in different design styles, or a style that maybe could be decisive - not so Lola Jeans, who have commited 100% to the idea of a style that maybe not everyone will love, but some people will adore.

It also doesn't hurt that you'll find great food here as well. Lola Jeans won the local 'Battle of the Bun' burger competition for 2018, creating an entirely new burger in every way, and beating a lot of other entries for taste, originality and creativity.

Tiger Hornsby

Sat on one of the most visited parts of the city, in the busy Quayside area, Tiger Hornsby is something of an oasis of calm, amongst the fairly heavy Newcastle party scene. if you've ever watched the tv 'show' Geordie Shore, you will have seen that Newcastle an be a bit hectic and crazy after a certain time. Well, Tiger Hornsby is the ideal place to come to find a moment of quiet, from a personal and from a design perspective. High ivy-covered ceilings contrast with low and long sofas and tables and chunky architecture, giving the impression of a sort of cosy spaciousness that is quite rare. However busy and crazy Newcastle can be, Tiger Hornsby never seems to be too bad, and can be the perfect place for an afternoon or evening drink when you just want to hang out and relax with friends.

Ernest

The hardest to find on this list, the most quiet and also maybe my favourite. Ernest is hidden under a bridge near to the Biscuit Factory, and although it's not as well known as the two bars above, it's absolutely well-worth exploring the city to find it. Although Newcastle is not necessarily known as a Summer city, this is one of the very best bars in newcastle when the sun is shining. A cute but spacious little sun terrace with classic pub benches greet sunny wanderers, and it's the perfect place to enjoy the wide selection of ales and cocktails they have here.

They also have amazing brunches here from 10:00 to 15:00, with proper full English breakfast options, as well as some more 'modern' and interesting choices too!
