In the far northern part of England, just 150 kilometres from Edinburgh in Scotland, Newcastle is often seen as a city with fairly rough edges. The accent can be a little tough to understand, and the TV show Geordie Shore did not do the city any favours. But away from the popular perception, Newcastle can be a surprisingly beautiful and cultural city, and well worth a visit!

On the banks of the Tyne

Like all great cultural cities, it sits on the banks of a big river. I don't know what is it about being able to walk along a riverbank, but for me it gives an undeniable air of romanticism. Newcastle is not quite in the leagues of Paris or Amsterdam, but the river and the impressive bridges that span it are certainly plus points.

Pretty city centre

I was really surprised by the architecture and the beauty of the main part of the city. It's old, grand and big, with heavy stone buildings similar to somewhere like Bath or Bristol, and has lovely open streets that never make you feel cooped up or enclosed. Excellent shopping and pedestrian friendly streets are further plus points.

No.1 for partying!

For many people, especially the large student population, would say that one of the best parts of Newcastle is the nightlife. The city has often been named in the top five cities for nightlife in the UK, and although cold for much of the year, it's a great city too eat and drink and dance! The Bigg Market and Gate Complex areas are some of the best to visit for bars, pubs and clubs.
