Georgia is a mountainous country, so there are many Mountain Rivers. The biggest river in Georgia is Mtkvari (Kura) River that starts from Turkey and flows through Turkey, Georgia and Azerbaijan, where it enters the Caspian Sea.

It covers a big part of Georgia. Mtkvari River enters Georgia through Vardzia. In some places, it flows through deep canyons. It flows between Meskheti and Trialeti ridges and enters the Borjomi Gorge.

Near Mtskheta, the river becomes narrower, while in Tbilisi it expands in width. After passing through the capital city, it continues flowing through Kvemo Kartli. The cities such as Tbilisi, Rustavi, Gori and Mtskheta are built on the banks of the Mtkvari River.

Aragvi River…

A system of Aragvi is created by the rivers such as Mtiuleti White Aragvi, Gudamakari Black Aragvi, Khevsureti and Pshavi Aragvi. In the upper and middle streams, Aragvi is a mountain river and in the downstream, it is a Vake River.

In Mtskheta, from Cross Monastery you can see a great panoramic view of two rivers connecting with each other – Aragvi and Mtkvari. They have different colors so you can clearly see the meeting point. This panoramic view is very famous among visitors so do not miss it and take a memorable photo. Georgian Military Road goes nearby Aragvi Gorge. Presumably, a foreign title of Aragvi is “Pelori” that is translated as “I am moving forward.”

In 65 BC, a famous Greek historian Dio Cassius mentioned it in the records about Romans’ invasion in Iberia. There are two types of Aragvi: Black and White. They meet with each other near the village Pasanauri and you can see clearly the difference in the colors. Some people compare it with yin and yang. After some distance, the river gradually mixes with each other and become one color, which is later connected with Mtkvari near the Mtskheta city.

Enguri River…

River Enguri is located in the west part of Georgia and flows between the administrative borders of Samegrelo and Abkhazia Regions.

This river is extremely important for Georgia because a hydroelectric station that is constructed near village Jvari, produces 4.5 million kilowatts of energy yearly which is about 40% of the national energy production. This is another great view you might want to check out because this hydroelectric station is surrounded by beautiful mountains. The river emerges from the Glacier Enguri and flows into the black sea.

Tergi River…

River Tergi flows in Georgia and in Russia as well. Starting from the Caucasus Mountains, it enters in the Dariali Gorge and partially flows side by side with Georgian Military Road. Stephantsminda (Kazbegi) is located on the banks of Tergi, which is a famous destination for tourist during wintertime.

Rioni River…

This beautiful river is the main river in western Georgia that emerges from the Caucasus Mountains and flows into the Black sea near Poti. Several hydroelectric stations are constructed around Rioni. This river creates several islands near Kutaisi. An old name of the Rioni River is “Pazisi.”

All those rivers that I mentioned above are characterized by a very fast flow in the upper sides. That is why it gives a great opportunity to extreme lovers to go rafting in Georgia. It is one of the famous extreme sports in our country. I will give you more detailed information about rafting in my next blog.
