All epochs from the prehistory over the classical periods of the old, middle and new realm over the late time up to the Greek-Roman time are represented in high-quality monuments. In addition, the cultures of ancient Sudan (Nubia) and the late Antiquity-Coptic period are represented, complemented by Egyptian monuments from the imperial Rome and monumental reliefs from the Assyrian Mesopotamia.

Architect Peter Böhm has developed the spatial concept of his design of a subterranean museum designed around a central atrium in accordance with the user's specifications. The exhibition concept does not conform to a given architecture; rather architecture is an integral part of the overall concept.

This is the result of many years of experience, based on a multi-layered development of the Munich Egypt collection for the public and on a very large number of thematic special exhibitions. The new approach no longer presents the objects in a chronological order, but in thematically oriented units, which allow the visitor to gain the broadest possible insight into ancient Egyptian art and culture. This content concept is realized in its embedding in the new rooms on three levels: presentation technology, lighting and media development.

The presentation of the works of art emphasizes their autonomy through large-scale, visibly contoured showcases for the sculptures and the deposit of the reliefs by large-scale black steel plates, which form a separating layer between the architecture and the object. Technically optimal conditions have been created for the lighting of the objects by means of light rail systems on the ceilings.

The media coverage of the exhibition was given special attention. With the exhibition designer, a program has been developed that leaves the original objects absolute dominance. Labels are kept short. Background information (graphics, photos) are consistently excluded from the primary appearance of the exhibition and into a digital system of outsourced interactive media stations, which are freely positioned in the room. With the help of a "mobile guide" the visitor can put together an individual tour or choose from a series of thematic tours (own version for children).

Accessibility in terms of architecture, but also in terms of content is a matter of course, the corresponding offer is constantly being expanded. A varied program for individual visitors and groups, families and students deepens the different themes of the exhibition.
