Welcome to the Black Box Theater!

Black Box Theater was founded in 1985. It is one of the programming studios in Norway that produces and presents international and Norwegian contemporary stage art.

With a history of over 30 years, Black Box Theater has evolved into a theater with a strong artistic identity. The theater is dedicated to modern and experimental forms of art, programming of Norwegian and international companies as well as new and established artists.

The program is characterized by a combination of artists who have a long relationship with Black Box theater and newly established artists from Norway and elsewhere in the world.

We are a theater that is aware of the experimental and transformation of stage art today. The program crosses different disciplines, emphasizes multifaceted artists, and proposes, among other things, connections with visual arts, music and literature.

The program also includes performances for children, youth and families to encourage the audience from an early age.

The Black Box theater program is articulated through two seasons (autumn season and spring season) and a festival, the Oslo International Theater Festival, which takes place each year in March.

Black Box Theater is in dialogue with the city. Beyond the box, how can art come into our daily lives and generate forms of poetic relationships with the environment around us? We invite artists and projects that incorporate Oslo as a field of excellence by working with urban landscapes, exploring our individual and collective memory and involving the inhabitants. Part of the program takes place in cooperation with local, national and international partners.

The black box theater signature is also its atmosphere: it's a happy place with a generous and dedicated team and a curious audience where artists feel safe at creating and performing.

With a history of more than 30 years, Black Box Theater has transformed to become what it is now: a theater with a strong artistic identity, dedicated to contemporary and experimental forms of performing arts, programming Norwegian and international companies, emerging and established artists. The program is characterized by a combination of artists who have a long relationship with Black Box theater and newcomers from Norway and elsewhere.

We are a theater that is attentive to experimentation and transformation of performing arts today. Our program crosses disciplines, pays attention to multifaceted artists, and proposes connections with visual arts, music and literature, among others. In order to encourage spectatorship from an early age and generations, the program includes shows for kids / youth and families. The Black Box theater program is articulated through 2 seasons (fall season and spring season) and a festival Oslo International Theater Festival, which takes place every year in March.
