The Dance Museum is the world's first museum of dance and movement. The founder of the museum, Rolf de Maré (1888-1964) traveled around the world and collected objects and documented dance in all forms. Therefore, there is a unique collection of authentic dance suits, instruments, sculptures, puppets, photographs and masks from Danish cultures in Asia, Africa and North America.

The dance museum's art collection includes a rich material from the Swedish Ballet in Paris, which Rolf de Maré ran during the 1920s. The company performed artistic groundbreaking sets using a range of artists, musicians, writers and filmmakers who all became world-renowned. Artworks by Fernand Léger, Giorgio de Chirico, Francis Picabia, Pierre Bonnard and Nils Dardel are represented in the dance museum's collections. Decoration and costume sketches by Alexandre Benois, Leon Bakst, Isaac Grünewald, Wilhelm Kåge and Lennart Rodhe are also an important part of the collection. The foundation of the museum's collections is Les Archives International de la Danse in Paris - the world's first research institute for dance created by Rolf de Maré.

In recent years, the museum has acquired one of the world's premier collection of original costumes from the legendary Russian Ballet in Paris, as well as costumes from sets at the Royal Opera and from the Cullberg Ballet.

The dance museum opened in Stockholm in 1953 in the Royal Opera House basement. With the Swedish Ballet's creativity as a guiding star, Rolf de Maré wanted his museum to be a meeting place for various art forms and blur the boundaries between dance, theater, visual arts and photography. Throughout his life, he strived to strengthen the role and dance of dance in society. The museum has been located in different directions in Stockholm over the years. Drottninggatan 17 is the sixth address of the museum where different artistic expressions continue to meet with the movement at the center.

Every year, the museum presents a number of temporary exhibitions and a wide range of programs for all ages. Here you can see dance performances, have a music experience, eat and drink well in our bistro or attend a dance workshop in an inspiring environment. The museum also has a Study Center with library, video library and archives that can be visited by appointment. The museum store has Stockholm's largest selection of dance books and dance films as well as souvenirs for small and large.

An important person for the Dance Museum's development and development is Bengt Häger, secretary secretary of the Paris archives and afterwards the museum director for many years. Since 1989, Erik Näslund is the head of the Dance Museum. The head of the Dance Museum is the foundation of the Dance Museum Foundation. The operations are financed financially by the state and by the Rolf de Marés memorial fund.
