The Historical Museum of Serbia is a complex museum complex with the task of collecting, preserving, studying, professionally and scientifically processing material testimonies of the history of Serbia, maintaining and completing museum collections, as well as information and documentation about them and makes them accessible to the public. The task of the Museum is to articulate and interpret the knowledge of the past of Serbia and the Serbian people, as well as other peoples and cultures on the territory of Serbia in a responsible and expert way through museum settings, and it accomplishes public communication with the national historical heritage.

Today, the Museum Fund is organized into twenty-five collections and funds and has about 35,000 objects.

The museum has gained a significant reputation in the country and the world by organizing representative exhibitions that have been shown not only in Belgrade and other cities in the country, but also in Europe, Africa, Australia and the United States. The Historical Museum has also hosted numerous exhibitions from Russia, Germany, Romania, Bulgaria and other countries.

The museum most often publishes publications that follow exhibitions, then other special editions within various research projects, as well as its permanent publication IMS Collection, whose first numbers (1954-1965) were published in the Museum of the First Serbian Uprising. By 2014, the museum published more than 210 publications.

Based on an analysis of the existing forms and methods of documenting data on museum objects not only in the Historical Museum, but also in all other cultural institutions that have artistic and historical cultural assets in its funds, the Historical Museum has developed an information system project that encompassed not only documentation of the collections, as well as documentation of the main activities of the Museum, thus creating the central documentation of the Museum in the informational, museological and / or professional sense.
