Militärhistorisches Museum der Bundeswehr - MHM Dresden

The MHM opened after seven years of renovation on 15 October 2011 again its doors to the public. In the first year, around half a million visitors were welcomed. The largest museum in Dresden, with more than 10,500 exhibits distributed over 13,000m² of exhibition space, is one of the three major historical museums in Germany, the German Historical Museum in Berlin and the House of History in Bonn.

Not only the renovation and extension of the star architect Daniel Libeskind created a fundamental reorientation of the former Royal Saxon arsenal building from the 19th century, but also the highly modern, therefore often unusual museum educational approach. The MHM presents the exhibits value-neutral in different perspectives, so that the mature museum visitors are not instructed, but rather stimulated to think along. Also, there is no "circular route", but the visitor is consciously offered to tap his museum out of his own personal interest. The presentation and media staging of the exhibits creates new images that emotionally involve the visitor. Military history becomes a spatial experience.

Unlike the other major European military museums, the MHM is not a museum of technology or warfare, but it does provide the visitor with all the military information in its historical development that a museum can expect. Nevertheless, the MHM differs from classic uniform and weapon presentations. Modern military history is not only the manifestations of state violence, but also deals with the many forms of social violence. Against this background, the MHM provides building blocks for a cultural history of violence in which the human being is at the center of contemplation.
