Description

The Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art is welcomed, together with the Diocesan Archives and the Innocenziana Library, in the splendid Seminary, built on a project by Giuseppe Cino by the bishop Michele Pignatelli, begun in 1694 and inaugurated in 1709 and then enlarged with the attic floor in 1729 by the successor Fabrizio Pignatelli. The paintings, sculptures, silverware and liturgical vestments, which are collected there, not only document the long journey of the artistic history of the Diocese, with particular reference to the city of Lecce, but also testify to the important role played by the Church in the life of the community of believers. The guide, associating the scientific rigor of the catalog of works with the agility of punctual historical reconstruction of that route, offers itself as a valuable tool to know and appreciate the quality and richness of the preserved artistic heritage and to recognize its specific territorial character.
