The Museum of Modern Art was created by the Province of Tarragona in 1976 to promote the study and knowledge of modern and contemporary art and also to preserve and show their artistic heritage and share it with the community. For this purpose constituted, then, the museum, equipped with an auxiliary library, a documentation center and a photographic archive. The building that houses the museum, located in the Upper Part of Tarragona, is the result of the union of three houses of the eighteenth century and restored by architect James Mutlló. In 1991 he was inaugurated structural restoration and conditioning as we know it today.
In 2008 the Museum of Modern Art presents the renovation of its permanent exhibition with a new museum project that provides an important didactic presentation of the collections.
To facilitate the bringing art to a broad sector of young audiences, the Museum of Modern Art offers schools through its educational services, the possibility of guided tours for school groups , from three years prior arrangement with the appointment. The educational services annually expands its educational offer in order to involve the community in teaching learning knowledge of modern and contemporary art.
