"Ladadika"

In the southwest of the Greco-Roman center of Thessaloniki, the Court Square and the intersection of its two most important roads, Egnatia and Venizelos, and up to the port, the central market of the newer city with the Byzantine and Ottoman Empire Markets and bazaars.   During the Ottoman domination, the market becomes its functional center, a meeting point for all the inhabitants of the city, as well as the contact of foreign and local people. After the middle of the 19th century, the coastal walls were demolished, and in 1866 the railway network was built. Then the establishment of commercial and shipping companies and state monopolies begins in the area, while the construction of the new harbor gathers here the trade of cereal-colonial oil.   At the end of the 19th century, the so-called Europeanization of the city took place, and so in the area flourished banks, office buildings, fashionable shops. The Ottoman authorities proceeded to openings, alignments and widening of roads to create the reception area for new services. In this process, the fire of 1917 also played a decisive role. Until 1917, all the wholesale trade in the area was made here, and later only the ladders were left.   It was named Ladadika from the ground-floor shops and warehouses where oil and other products were stored.   In the streets of the area, during World War I and later, there were houses of tolerance (hence the song "in Ladadika sell what you want ..."). It was on the edge even after the Second World War, but began to decline after the earthquakes of 1978, as the wholesale trade went out, the warehouses were abandoned and in the 1980s the image of the ruined buildings was tragic. The neighborhood became infamous and difficult One could pass through the night, even though it is located in the city center.

In 1985 the area of Ladadika was declared by the Ministry of Culture as a historical site, a listed monument and the building of blocks of flats was banned. After studies, it was decided to rescue the buildings with the funding of the individuals who would have their new use. The rebirth of the Ladadians was a fact!

Today, the old ladadias, warehouses and homes of tolerance, have given way to bars, restaurants and ouzo. Today its low, three-storey buildings are the oldest nucleus of the historical center of Thessaloniki.   Since the end of the 20th century, Ladadika has been the synonym of entertainment for Thessaloniki. It was and remained the top destination for Salonika's evening excursion but also a picturesque spot, a point of reference for visitors.   Famous restaurants, picturesque tavernas, colorful bars and clubs coexist harmoniously in the cobbled slopes. Preserved buildings with large windows full of laughter, laughter, lights and colors make up a unique frame, today's Ladadika.
