The 7th Tallinn Applied Art Triennial took place from 21.04.2017 to 23.07.2017. The triennial is an international art event, this year it invited audiences to reflect on the concept of time. Being constantly hurried, overloaded with information and the subsequent superficiality is tiring. The opposite, slowness is often considered as backwardness. How to find balance?
Applied artists and designers reacted to current issues, using their own particular means of expression. The main exhibition “Ajavahe. Time Difference” in the Estonian Applied Art and Design Museum displayed jewellery, glass, textile, blacksmithing and ceramics. The subjective nature of a person’s sense of time was contemplated through traditional and smaller formats, as well as video and large-scale installations.
In addition to the main exhibition the triennial had a substantial satellite programme, featuring numerous solo and group exhibitions. A seminar discussing mediation in applied art took place and audiences were invited to take part in artist talks and guided tours.
