"The Genealogy of the Unconventional Dambovitean: The Green Hours LUNI Theater

The 90s brought the old Romanian state-owned companies an infusion of individualizations and independent projects, all the way, including theater. It was a time of change, creative exploration and artistic experiments.

On Calea Victoriei, number 120, a space where young artists were gathered in 1994, listened to jazz, narrated projects and utopian dreams. The place evolved naturally and soon the first artistic society truly uninhibited by the Communist memeteries, the first Romanian café-theater, the first 100% independent theater in Romania: The Green Hour Monday Theater.

With Voicu Rădescu in the foreground, space would come out of anonymity very quickly, and Romania would soon find out that the success of a show is not only about working with a ministry, with established actors or directors, and that the value of a treaty is not measures in sold tickets or published reviews. Young people looking for a place in art but refusing to enter the classic promotion channels believed in this space, played and mounted the theater (often with ridiculous budgets) creating a unique artistic nursery in the modern history of Romania. The scene (very small) from here has propelled in the theater world (very large) a lot of names that now are heads of poster in any theater in the country like: Maia Morgenstern, Florin Piersic jr, Dorina Chiriac, Marius Manole, Dragos Bucur, Radu Afrim , Stefan Peca and very many others.

UNITER awards have been won, international awards have been won, tours have begun in the Capitals of Europe, the ocean has passed

In the more than select company of the Social Dialogue Group, the 22-hour Magazine and the Humanitas Bookstore at the bottom of the courtyard, the Green Hour Monday Theater was, is and will certainly remain one of the strongest bases of alternative culture in Romania , although the place is going through a time when he finds on his skin that the financial interests of some can crush any symbol. "

Vlad Ignat - "Adevărul" (Dec. 2012)

The LUNI Theater (the first café-theater in Romania) was founded in 1997 at the Green Hours 22 jazz-café club on Calea Victoriei 120. Hundreds of artists performed in the thousands of performances that took place at the headquarters or in the many festivals and other theatrical events in the country and abroad where we were invited.

The Green Hours 22 - LUNI Theater - brought together and reunite the prestigious names of the Romanian stage with debutants or other young actors and very young among the most dynamic and talented - in performances (especially off-off Broadway) of young directors, scenographers and playwrights of the most valuable, but also of "consecrated" in the field. Green Hours' performances have gained over the years a growing audience and an impact on the media, attracting more and more young artists to the stage. Of these, not many have started and / or confirmed in the unconventional space and atmosphere of the club. His "artists" (Ana Mărgineanu, Andreea Bibiri, Florin Piersic jr.) Were nominated three times at the UNITER Gala for performances or roles played here. In addition, Piersic Jr. won the UNITER Best Actress Award for 2003 for "Sex, Drugs, Rock & Roll" by Eric Bogosian, produced by Green Hours.

Together with the ACT Theater, LUNI Theater co-organized the first two editions of the Independent Theater Festival FIT, INDEPENDENT OFF (2000) and UNDERGREENACT (2001), as well as the unique producer of the third edition: "LUNI" (2003).

Between September 2003 and September 2004, the Green Hours LUNI Theater initiated the "THEATER OF CONSUMPTION" program (9 directors, 9 premieres, 90 performances). THE CONSUMER THEATER had an almost indefinite resonance, both among young artists and the media, especially (which is also the most important) among the audience.

The LUNI Theater is an independent theater, self-financing from the Green Hours 22 jazz-cafe business. It does not benefit from any kind of funding, except for "grants" obtained from applications to participate in events where it is invited abroad.

Executive Director of LUNI Theater: Voicu Rădescu.
