The establishment of LEMM-G due Macedonian Educational Society (Constantinople 1871 - Thessalonica 1924 cc), a club with great action in education.


In 1931 the Brotherhood, led by its President, Ioanni Tari (1885-1968), expanding its interests, began collecting folklore in northern Greece. In the decades that followed, thanks to the painstaking efforts of the members of the Brotherhood gathered a large number of objects, representative of life of rural communities in Macedonia.


1957 was established as a private legal entity Folklore Museum of Northern Greece ,, which was housed in an apartment at number 55 the coastal avenue Victory. In 1958 John Tari succeeded Konstantinos Kefalas, who continued with zeal enrichment work, recording and report of the original collection.


1970 founded as a Public Entity (Entity) in Thessaloniki, the Folklore and Ethnological Museum of Macedonia (LEMM), where the use of the building is reserved for the Queen Olga Street 68, known as "Old Government House" or "Villa Modiano." Core collections of the new Museum is the collection of the Brotherhood.


In 1971 the Museum under the supervision of the newly established Ministry of Culture. After work on adapting the building to the needs of the Museum, the LEMM opened its doors in 1973, and in 1981 introduced the public its reports, under the new museological concepts.


In 1986 the supervision of the Museum moved from Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Macedonia-Thrace and in 1993 the museum was renamed Folk Art and Ethnological Museum of Macedonia and Thrace with the extension of its jurisdiction and in Thrace. In 1995, reports temporarily put out of service to the public, as they embark on extensive building maintenance and renovation work. The new building is delivered restored in 2000. In 2001 the supervision of LEMM-G returns to the Ministry of Culture.


In 2003, the operation of the permanent exhibition "In the windmills of Macedonia and Thrace - watermills, water-saws, fulling, mantania in traditional society", the Museum reopens its doors to the public, ushering in a new period of life for the body. In 2005 he inaugurated the second permanent exhibition, which relates to the Traditional Costumes of Macedonia and Thrace (1860-1960). According to the exhibition program of the Museum, the permanent exhibitions will follow for food and housing.
