Museo de las Momias de Guanajuato Oficial

With more than 150 years of history, the Mummies of Guanajuato have become part of our own culture and our traditions as a people settled on the slopes of a great gorge that since the Spanish viceroyalty has generously given the wealth that its entrails keep.   In 1865 the first mummified body that lay in the pantheon of Santa Paula was extracted. Thus, as years go by, other bodies are discovered in the same conditions due to the characteristics of the ground on which they rested. At present, more than one hundred mummies are part of the inventory of the Museum created in his honor.   The astonishment that the mummies awaken has been the reason for the accomplishment of innumerable films with characters of the Mexican wrestling that during the decade of the seventies managed that the images of these corpses of stuccoed appearance were known in other countries.   Starting in 2007, the Municipal Government redesigned the old Museum of the Mummies so that its exhibition was made with a thematic sense and with the appropriate infrastructure for an exhibition of this nature that annually attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors.   The Mummies of Guanajuato are totally integrated to the culture of the inhabitants of Guanajuato Capital, since from the historical and social point of view, they represent different stages that have allowed this city to consolidate now as an important national tourist destination.   Preserving and increasing the cultural heritage around the legacy of the mummies has also been subject to careful scientific studies by specialists in forensic medicine and anthropology from the United States of America.   These scientists have done studies on mummies in other parts of the world and in Guanajuato they are applying advanced techniques that will result in the enrichment of the museographic archive since it will be possible to know the possible channels of death, approximate ages, social environment and even the facial reconstruction of the mummified bodies.   The Mummies are part of the Heritage of Guanajuato, so it is something that we preserve, preserve and share with visitors who come to our city in their search.
