The Casa do Pontal Museum, located in Rio de Janeiro, is considered the largest and most significant museum of Brazilian popular art. The collection of about 8,000 pieces was assembled by Frenchman Jacques Van de Beuque (1922-2000), who was also responsible for the construction of the Museum, which began in 1976. The collection and the building were registered in 1991 and constitute a patrimony of public interest. It has been certified by UNESCO and received several awards for its performance, among them the Order of Cultural Merit in 2005. National and international personalities consider the museum as a reference in Brazilian culture. Writer José Saramago was inspired by the visit to the collection to write the book "A Caverna", published in 2000. In 2004, Gilberto Gil, then Minister of Culture, said: "The Casa do Pontal Museum is a 3x4 portrait of Brazil ". In 2010, the institution won the Culture Prize of the State of Rio de Janeiro, in the category "Material Patrimony".
