The museum is housed in a beautiful Renaissance house called Mydlářovský dům in Chrudim in Břetislavova Street.

The collection of museum collections has become the private collection of Prof. PhDr. Jana Malík (1904 - 1980). Jan Malik also helped organize the individual national centers of UNIMA's international puppet organization to donate a museum of puppets from their countries. Today, the Museum has about 50,000 collections, of which more than 8,500 puppets from around the world. The collection also includes scenic designs and mock-ups, backdrops, artworks with puppetry, posters and programs, photographs, audio and video recordings, prints, manuscripts, and other archival materials.

There is also a museum library with a specialized fund, which has about 18,000 volumes.

The museum's activities are not limited to the collection and processing of documents related to the development of Czech as well as world puppetry, but it also organizes exhibitions not only in its premises but also elsewhere in the Czech Republic and abroad. It also prepares lectures, workshops, puppet shows and other accompanying programs for collectives and the public.
