The Museum of the University of Warsaw dates back to the time when the University was founded, ie the years 1809-1817. In 1809 the purchase of works from the old collections of King Stanislaus August was initiated, and in 1817 the Department of Science and Fine Arts was established together with its Museum. It was housed for several years at the Kazimierzowski Palace, but already in 1820 it was located in the building of the present Historical Institute, which is still called (museum). His most beautiful interior, known as the Column Theater, is back from February this year. (2012) to its former representative-museum function, whose main decoration is the gypsum castings of the most outstanding works of ancient and Renaissance sculpture. The Museum of the First University of Warsaw (1808 / 1816-1831) can be considered as the first public museum in Poland and the institution from which the idea of the National Museum grew.

The university museum, like the university itself, underwent a vicious cycle of fate, and finally in 1980 it was reactivated. Its main purpose is to collect objects related to the history of the university and to animate the activities that are commemorating its past and present. At first the university collections were exhibited at the Kazimierz Palace; In 2000 they were transferred to the Classicist Tyszkiewicz-Potocki Palace at Krakowskie Przedmiescie 32. In 2013, the rector of the University of Warsaw, prof. Marcin Pałys, signed an agreement with the Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego under the JESSICA initiative, thanks to which funds were raised for the renovation of the Palace. The works ended in 2015, and in January 2016 the jubilee exhibition "Orzeł and five stars of the University" was opened for the public.
