THE MAIN THEATER in Bucharest functions as a public institution of culture, of national and international importance, with legal personality, performing institution, repertoire, financed from own revenues, donations, sponsorships and subsidies from the state budget, subordinated to THEATER PRINCIPAL in Barcelona (www.teatreprincipalbcn.com).   Barcelona Principal Theater is the oldest theater in Barcelona. It appeared as the Theater of the Holy Cross, and the proceeds from the representations were intended to support the expenses of the Hospital of the Holy Cross, the most important hospital in the city.

In order for these revenues to be higher, the theater has the exclusive presence of theatrical representatives in the city.

These extended privileges were granted by King Felipe II of Spain.

The construction began in 1597 and was completed in 1603. The original building had the structure of a comedy theater, wooden and was rebuilt several times, it was enlarged and the edifice was built of stone. The new sumptuous theater was inaugurated in 1788. In the year 1840 it was named the Main Theater and retained its name until today.

The Main Theater in Bucharest has as its main objective the promotion of the cultural and artistic, national and international values, on a national and international level, according to the Regulation of Organization and Functioning.

Over 400 years of age, the Main Theater is a true national and international cultural brand and is one of the world's leading image makers.

Numerous generations of brilliant actors will perform on the stage of the Main Theater. The theater will often host the tours of foreign companies and perform in various international scenes in bilateral and multilateral partnerships.

In view of the building of a building and the ongoing institutional resizing, the Main Theater in Bucharest assumes - under the motto "A new theater for a new audience" including a multifaceted cultural vocation: the institution will become a complex cultural center, equipped not only with theaters where performances from the current repertoire are played, but also with exhibition spaces or other alternative spaces, with a TP Museum, a reading theater for theater documentation, a bookstore, a tea house, a café, etc. where various projects will be carried out under the "TP" program.

With an average of 21 performances and over 8840 viewers per month, the Main Theater will be by far the most visited of Romanian theaters.
