Estonian resorts began to develop in the middle of the 19th century, and their full time of operation was achieved by the turn of the century and their development continued until the First World War.

The emergence of resorts in Estonia was facilitated by wet mud with good healing properties and the interest of local doctors in the application of health mud and the possibility of the treatment spa in practice.

The impetus for the revival of tourism was the construction of the railway in the 1870s. Thus, the regions of Haapsalu and Narva-Jõesuu quickly became the preferred resting places for the Russian tsar court, Russian rich entrepreneurs and high intelligence. At the same time, Pärnu and Kuressaare became the resort towns.

The development of the resorts also took place during the Soviet era. Existing treatment options were expanded and new treatment and recreation complexes were built.

Today, the Spa Association of Estonia includes companies with modern facilities, comfortable accommodation and extensive treatment facilities. In addition to medical spa services, companies also offer wellness (wellness) services, beauty services and diverse leisure activities.
