Our museum was founded in 1919 by Ferenc Hopp (1833-1919), owner of the company, world traveler, art collector and patron, who left his or her eastern collections of about 4000 pieces to the state in order to create an oriental art museum. The collection was placed in the owner's house in Andrássy út, which is a museum since 1923; when it was founded and today it is the only museum in Eastern Art in Hungary. The garden around the Hopp villa was known for its pioneering Oriental atmosphere, and is still an integral part of the museum's everyday life, as it is the location of most of our programs.
