Museum für Druckkunst

Founded in 1994, the Museum of Prints and Drawings presents a combination of a manufacturing workshop and a museum with 500 years of print history to touch. Around 100 functioning machines and presses from the graphic arts sector convey historical font casting, typesetting and printing processes in a unique workshop atmosphere.

At the heart of the collection, in addition to the numerous printing presses and presses, is the fully functional type foundry, in which one of Germany's last active type foundries can be seen at work. The traditional set of hands is maintained in the museum as well as the machine set developed at the end of the 19th century.

In a lively way, visitors are familiarized with "black art", as experts explain and demonstrate the machines that are ready for use every day. Visitors can set their own texts with the support of the specialist staff or print various motifs on a cup press. Artists have the opportunity to create their own graphic prints on the historic printing presses and machines.

A workshop for wood engraving from around 1900, a fully-equipped manual bindery and numerous toggle presses enrich and complete the collection. The collection of lead and wood letters, dies and steel stamps of European and Oriental origin, unique in Germany, underscore the museum's character as a special place of industrial culture in the field of technology and art.
