In archaeological excavations in Retznei (south of Leibnitz) a settlement was discovered, which extends from the Bronze Age to the Roman era. A Celtic homestead group under the Roman villa, which included two bathing facilities, testifies to the importance of the site.
In the museum in the "Rauchstubenhaus" Retznei 26, elements of the luxurious furnishings of the Roman villa as well as Celtic bronze jewelery and an altar of the goddess Fortuna are shown.
The excavations in Retznei took place in 1873 and in the years 2004-2012. Retznei is also known as a fossil site found in Leithakalk, which is today mined in several quarries. The geology and local history is dedicated to a room in the museum, another to the archaeological finds whose meaning is explained on display boards. A film about the archaeological discovery of the villa as well as other sites and the associated problem of the protection of monuments is also shown in the museum. Guided tours to the archaeological site in Retznei (300 meters from the museum) as well as to neighboring monuments are offered.
