The National Museum in Kraljevo was founded on May 1, 1950 as the Museum of Homeland War called the City Museum Rankovićevo. In 1953, the Museum changed its name to the National Museum of Ranković, and since 1955 it has the present name of the National Museum in Kraljevo. During the following years, the most important undertaking was the formation of a collection of copies of the XIII century frescoes, which were made by the most famous Serbian copywriters, which resulted in the opening of the so-called " Galleries of frescoes in 1965.


The National Museum in Kraljevo according to the classification of museum objects belongs to complexes of museums and contains 5 collections: for archeology, numismatics, ethnology, history and art around which the same departments have been formed, as well as departments for conservation, documentation, pedagogical-propaganda work and professional library . According to the territorial classification, the regional museum is competent for three municipalities: Kraljevo, Raska and Vrnjacka Banja.


After 60 years since the founding, the Museum in Kraljevo has grown into a significant institution in the field of protection of movable cultural goods that takes care of thousands of objects classified into collections, organizes exhibitions and publishing activities, scientific meetings, round tables, workshops, music programs and promotional literature. The museum fosters successful cooperation with all relevant institutions of protection, culture, science and higher education institutions. The crown of the decades-long work of the Museum is a permanent exhibition opened on May 15, 2008. Mihajlo Valtrović, awarded by the Museum Society of Serbia to the National Museum in Kraljevo in 2008, best speaks about the success in work and contribution in the field of culture.


The building where the museum is now located The museum is an adapted old school building built in 1873, in which until 1975, the School of Fine Arts, Gymnasium and elementary school worked. In 1985 the municipality of Kraljevo transferred this building to the ownership of the Museum. The adaptation of the building began in 1993, and the first phase, or the ground floor of the building, was completed in 1995. The second phase defined in stages floor - attic - facade was completed between 2002 and 2005, whereby the Museum received a space of 1270 m2 in 4 levels.
