In addition to important collections of Rhenish Impressionists and Expressionists, the critical realists of the 70s and the collection of international graphics of the 19th and 20th centuries, the Städtische Galerie has gained a good reputation through large art and cultural history exhibitions. It gained supra-regional importance through the affiliation of the "Ludwig Institute for Art of the GDR". After extensive reconstruction, the Ludwig Galerie became a new institution in the worldwide circle of museums associated with the name of Ludwig. As a "temporary museum", it brings together masterpieces of old and modern art from the Irene and Peter Ludwig collections. In addition, important works of applied and media-effective arts such as caricature, comics, photography, poster art are related to the so-called high art. In the rooms of the "Little Castle" is located next to the museum shop and the Oberhausen Trausaal. With the exhibition "Art sets signs" in the context of the final of the International Building Exhibition Emscher Park (IBA), Schloss Oberhausen became the gateway to landmark art projects in the Ruhr area in 1999. The visitor center in the "Little Castle" informs about travel offers to the landmarks. In the memorial hall of the castle is the permanent exhibition "Oberhausen in National Socialism". In addition, documentary exhibitions on current topics of peace education and political education are shown here at regular intervals.
