Teatr Żydowski

The Jewish Theater was established in 1950 as a result of the merger of two bands: the Lower Silesian Jewish Theater in Wrocław and the Jewish Theater in Łódź. In the following years, the theater was active in both these cities and performed guestally throughout Poland. In 1955, at the initiative of Ida Kamińska, the theater moved to Warsaw, to a building which is not present today at Królewska Street 13. Since 1970 the theater has been operating in a new building on Grzybowski Square. In 1968 a large group of actors, including the then director and artistic director Ida As a result of the events in March, Kamińska left Poland. For a year p.o. The director of the theater is Juliusz Berger. From 1969 to the year 2014 the chief and artistic director of the Jewish Theater was Szymon Szurmiej. Since 2015 the director of the theater is Gołda Tencer.

From the beginning of its existence, the repertoire of the Theater was interwoven and intertwined with three repertoires. The first one is the classics of Yiddish literature and theater, such as Salomon Ettinger, Abraham Goldfaden, Jakub Gordin, Sholem Aleich, Icchok Lejb Perec, Szymon Anski, Perec Hirszbejn, Shalom Asz. The second trend is the art from outside the canon of Yiddish literature, dealing with Jewish subjects, among others. Arthur Miller, Isaac Babla, or Ily Erenburg. The third stream is revisits and cabaret performances.

Jewish Theater im. Esther Rachel and Ida Kaminski in Warsaw are the only Jewish Theater in Poland and one of the two permanent theaters in Yiddish. Since July 2012, according to the statute, the Theater is running the Yiddish Cultural Center.
