There are many ways to visit one country. I love visiting cities and their amazing hidden architectural gems, but I am happy when I also have the opportunity to practice sports. In Romania, one can find all of that, and in winter there are some options for practicing skiing and snowboarding. My favorite place is the Ski Resort in Borșa. It is a place where one can be adventurous, enjoy the wonderful snow, practice sports and appreciate a breath-taking landscape. Borșa is in the Maramureș County, in northern Romania.

The resort

The resort is placed 100 kilometers from Bistrița in the Rodnei Mountains, part of the Carpathian Chain. Here, Romania’s biggest slope awaits all winter sports lovers. An unforgettable landscape is surely one that will make you come here over and over again.

There are two possibilities to get on top of the mountain and five trails. There are two ski-lifts which will take one up, but if you are bold, you can hike 850 meters and arrive at the top of the mountain at an altitude of over 2000 meters by foot.

Why to come here?

I already confessed that this is my favorite place for practicing skiing and snowboarding. This fact is not random, and there are many reasons to go there every winter. One of them is a natural, unique and famous ski jumping hill, 50 m high, made out of a huge rock. If you are a beginner, don’t be discouraged because there are ski slopes for all skill levels

Olympic ski slope

For those of you who are already mastering winter sports, some improvements await you starting the year 2019. In the next two years, the ski resort will be transformed into an Olympic ski slope. The idea of an Olympic ski slope was first brought up before the Second World War, in 1940. It was then decided, that the Winter Olympics of the year 1948 will be hosted here. The war stopped this idea from being realized, but the desire to have an Olympic ski slope here resurfaced many times over the years. It is now that this idea will finally come true, and in the next two years the capacity will be increased to 1,800 people per hour, the nocturnal lights will be installed, and a snow-canon will ensure that winter lovers have the perfect conditions for practicing their favorite sports.

Despite being famous as the ski resort, there are other activities you can do in Borșa. This ski resort is opened from December until April every year, but if you go in the summer, you can take your bicycle and practice downhill. Not far from here is the Horse’s Waterfall, where you can admire nature as an architect, and if you are searching for a hidden architectural gem, definitely visit the Bârsana Monastery. There are so many other ways to be adventurous at Borșa Ski Resort and enjoy your stay surrounded by one unforgettable landscape.
