The museum is located on Mažuranić Square no. 14, in the representative secessionist building, attributed to the architect Vjekoslav Bastl, at the time of construction employed by the office of architects Hönigsberg and Deutsch. Built for the needs of the Museum of Crafts and Crafts, opened in 1904, remains one of the few buildings dedicated to the needs of museum activity in Croatia. The central space, the dome, exudes the statues of sculptor Rudolf Valdec, while the interior of the dome was painted by the painter Oton Iveković. For the exhibition of ethnographic materials, the interior of the building was adapted to the adaptations of space, the last of which was designed in 1972 by architect Alexander Freudnereich. Over 85.000 items have been collected from all areas of Croatia, European and other countries during this time. Most of the fundraising consists of textile items (costume, textiles), but also collections of items of traditional economy, handicrafts, furniture, trades, customs and others. Particularly valuable is the collection of objects of traditional cultures of non-European countries born at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, mainly by the gifts of our sailors, researchers, travelers and artists. Among them, we should mention Požega Dragutin Lermana and Karlovčana, brothers Mirko and Stevo Seljana. The museum has extensive photographic documentation, a library of about 20,000 volumes; has an organized preparatory and restoration service and a developed pedagogical activity. The public is represented by a permanent exhibition, exposed on the ground floor (non-European culture) and on the 1st floor (folk costumes from Croatia, late 19th and early 20th century), occasional exhibitions, lectures, professional and scientific gatherings, film projections, concerts and similar activities. The museum publishes a professional journal "Ethnological Research" and catalogs follow the exhibition activity.
