The State Historical Museum is the largest national historical museum in Russia, whose collections most fully reflect its centuries-old history and culture from ancient times to the present day. Its collections, which have been forming for almost a century and a half, comprise about 5 million museum objects and 14 million sheets of documentary materials, this is 1/12 of the State Museum Fund of the Russian Federation. The main building of the State Historical Museum and its branch Pokrovsky Cathedral ("St. Basil's Cathedral") by decision of the XIV Session of UNESCO (12/07/1990) as part of the Red Square objects are included in the List of World Cultural and Natural Heritage Sites. In accordance with the Convention on the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage of 1972 (Russia ratified it in 1988), the State Historical Museum conducts a great deal of work on the protection and preservation of monuments of both global and federal significance.
