Pokrajinski Muzej Maribor

The Provincial Museum of Maribor is a general museum which deals with the collection, protection, preservation, exploration, exhibition and popularization of movable cultural heritage in the field of archeology, ethnology and wider cultural history in the area of ​​the wider Maribor region.

The year 1903 is considered the birthplace of the museum, while the collections of today's museum are the heirs of three museum collections.

The oldest was the collection of sacral art kept by the Diocesan Museum, founded in 1896 with the synod of Bishop Mihail Napotnik. The other was a collection of the Museum Society. In 1902 the Founded Museum Society opened its museum for the public a year later. The Historical Society of Slovensko Štajersko, founded in 1903, opened its collections to the public in 1909 at the premises of the National House.

The collections of the Museum Society and the Historical Society for Slovensko Štajersko joined in 1920, and in 1924 a collection of the Diocesan Museum was added to them. Until 1938, the merged collections were located in the premises of the former penitentiary in today's Cankarjeva ulica. This year the museum moved to the premises of the Maribor city castle, where it is still today.

    * With museum collections, exhibitions, events, knowledge and documents, we are promoting the interest in the culture and history of our space and spreading the knowledge about it.     * Special attention is paid to younger visitors, for whom we prepare professional guides in the form of lessons and occasional children's workshops.     * We also open our rooms to other events: concerts, lectures, professional meetings, ...     * Through the publishing activity we ensure that our research findings are delivered to the public for permanent disposition.
