A cave with seven stone doors in Aragatsotn

2 minutes to read

I have decided to share with you information I have on caves in Armenia. The first one I'm going to tell you about is called “the cave with seven stone doors”. Behind this mysterious name, is a man-made cave in an already existing natural cave, and we have to find out who and how made it. It is located in the Aragatsotn province and is situated on the hills next to the village of Ujan. When visiting the cave, it would be great if you could also stop by this village, that is known for being a home of the first statue of Andranik Ozanyan (Andranik means "firstborn" in Armenian). He was an Armenian military commander during the Armenian national liberalization movement. Andranik is considered to be a national hero, and there are several statues erected to him in different countries.

The cave and the surrounding area

They say that a long time ago people used to live here. There are several holes beneath the cave where they used to collect beans. To be honest, it’s a bit complicated to find the entrance of the cave as there are many small and big caves in this territory. Even if you do not find it, be aware that just by walking up the hills and down the gorges you will enjoy your day, as the surrounding area is awesome, nature is nice, and the air is fresh. I would even say that it is a perfect place for camping, especially in mid-spring and mid-autumn (to avoid snakes). If you love wild nature, this can be something you are looking for.

The cave has exactly seven small but heavy stone doors. What’s interesting, the stone doors are still there, and you can open them by simply pulling, without putting much efforts. Till now, it's not really clear was it a shelter for people or it served as something else, but, still, it's an interesting thing to see. However, I would suggest to go there only if you have previously done this kind of experiences, as it is not an easy one to be explored. For instance, a half of the way in the cave you have to crawl through the tunnels that connect the halls to each other. There are several halls in this cave.

Yes, the cave with seven stone doors is an interesting place to see, but if you want to discover something that is not man-made and is even better, bigger and more gorgeous, then it would be great to check the caves of Magil, the Bear cave, the Mozrov cave and Areni 1 cave. All of those are located in the Vayots Dzor province. For all them, it would be great to be experienced and physically well prepared.
