A city-region where more than 100 different nationalities and languages live side by side in its streets, offices, schools and universities....

Once regarded internationally as a second-level city, it opened up to the world during the 1958 universal exhibition held at the Heysel. Capital of Belgium and the European Union and the seat of numerous international institutions, the city's role as a political and administrative centre has heightened its international visibility. This development has in no way altered the hospitality of its residents and its reputation as a city on a human scale. Brussels is not an easy city to discover or to get to know, but all those who have done so loathe to leave. The city is the hometown several famous personalities such as the painter Magritte, and the singer Jacques Brel.
