If you need a challenge, a moment of self-prove, hiking paths in Croatia will give you exactly that. I only have one advice to give: get as many information as you can before you decide what mountain you will visit. Croatia has so much to offer when it comes to hiking, but be aware of your skills. Mountain can be as mild as cruel, depending on your condition. This time, I will reveal you all about a beautiful sleepy giant above the sea - Biokovo. But don't forget to visit Velika Kapela and Velebit as well.

Biokovo is the largest and longest mountain of Dalmatia. And for sure, it is the most beautiful one. But you should know, it is also the harshest one. Mostly rocky parts will give you a hard time going to the top. All paths are labeled with medium to hard to reach, so be careful with your choice. Reaching the highest peak of the mountain, Sveti Jure (St. George) and its 1762 m.a.s.l. can be different, as you have a few ways to approach it. The mountain itself has special beauty as there you can see various natural phenomena such as sinkholes, scrubs, pits, caves and around 40 endemic plant species. About Biokovo, the whole book can be written. But I will tell you only about the most beautiful points.

Štrbina

Not far from Vošac, there is Štrbina at 800 m.a.s.l. You can reach it by car. Not so far from that parking, you will find yourself at the viewpoint on the sea and islands. If you decide not to use a car, you can reach it from Makarska.

Vošac

After 20 minutes of hiking from Štrbina, you will reach Vošac and a new viewpoint. The path is medium heavy for hiking. This is the oldest path to reach the top of Biokovo.

Sveti Jure

If you decide to reach Sveti Jure from Vošac, you will have to overcome a steep path around 6 km long. If you opt to try from the coastal side, you will start from Veliko BrdoHikers, get ready to climb in Biokovo Nature Park, as the most difficult path is from the east side of the mountain, and the biggest part is just climbing.

Once you reach the very top of Biokovo, you will see a small church built out of white rocks. The Church of Sveti Jure was built in 1968, on the place of a previous church for which is believed that it existed in the 12th century. The remains of an old church were removed due to the construction of a TV tower in 1965, but soon it was rebuilt again. The view from there is breathtaking. You can see the sea and islands, and on a very bright day, you can even see the mountains of Bosnia and Herzegovina and a small part of Italy.
