After the city's cinema disappeared from the cultural map of Croatia, and the cinema-screening activity was completely taken over by the multiplex halls opened in almost all major cities, in the last ten years there has been a revitalization of old city cinemas. Assembled by the program of digitalization of independent cinemas, which set up the infrastructural foundations for survival and program development, independent Croatian cinematographers expressed the need and desire for networking, as well as with program, education and promotion co-operation. At the first Congress of Independent Screenwriters held in August 2014 in Zadar, a joint decision was made on the establishment of the Cinema Network, and on November 7, the Croatian Network of Independent Cinematographers was established at the Founding Assembly in Zagreb.

It was founded by 27 screenwriters from 24 cities in order to strengthen the position of independent cinema within the film industry itself and to launch and develop a film culture in all its forms throughout Croatia. The key activities of the Network are the linking and exchange of programs of exceptional artistic, cultural and historical values, the development of audiences of all categories with emphasis on film education for children and young people, continuous education of members in marketing, organizational, technological and program areas and advocacy and proactive action in the framework of local, national and European cultural policies.

The establishment of the Croatian Network of Independent Screenwriters is an important step in the further development of the film industry in Croatia. Network members are infrastructure and technological capacities on a quality level and meet all modern standards, and the Network will strive to maximize the use of this infrastructure for the benefit of citizens and visitors from all over the world.

Today, July 17, 2017, the cinema network has 39 members and 52 cinemas in 39 cities and islands all over Croatia.

Independent screenwriters perform a public function based on their status as public institutions, artistic organizations or mission they have set themselves. This public function can be defined as the promotion of film as an artwork, the mediation of film culture in educational programs, a critical and reflexive approach, and the servicing of the display needs of local film production. That is why these entities need to develop strategies that are not based exclusively on a commercial approach and find sustainability models within which they will maintain their basic orientation and public function. It is important to emphasize that independent cinema in many parts of our country is one of the few cultural institutions and as such is an invaluable part of the public and cultural life of a particular region. Thus, continuous and high-quality film programs in these areas are necessary and have great significance and impact on the quality of life of the local population.

The fields of action of the Network are culture and art with an emphasis on audiovisual and media culture, the audiovisual industry and the cinema-screening activity.

Cinema network is a non-profit association registered on February 17, 2015 at the City Department of General Administration of the City of Zagreb. Activities of the Network are supported by the Croatian Audiovisual Center, the Culture Foundation Nova and the City of Zagreb.

The vision of the Network is a strong organizational and programming association of independent cinema that is able to respond synergistically to all the challenges and needs of adapting to new conditions, trends and demands in the cinema and cultural and artistic sector. In the vision, we see a powerful Network that is capable of achieving continuous improvement and development of independent cinemas, to encourage them to continue program and organizational cooperation, exchange of experience and knowledge, examples of good practice and, ultimately, the unified energy of all members of the Network to be able to publicly and efficiently share in the public the goal of the planned tasks that the Network has outlined.

The mission of the Network is to strengthen and develop sustainable organizational, programmatic and technical capacities of independent cinemas, create legal, structural and economic preconditions for their quality work, enrich existing and launch new cultural and artistic and educational offerings in local communities throughout Croatia, and encourage and support the environments no cinema to launch movie programs.

The mission is realized through continuous education and exchange of experiences, knowledge and examples of good practices, exchange of programs and joint marketing and promotional activities, national and international sectoral and cross-sectoral cooperation, public advocacy and partnership with government institutions, and active participation in the creation of local, national and European cultural policy .
