Explore Bari – a Metropolis with an historic charm

When you arrive in Apulia it is very likely that Bari is your first stop, since it has the best developed transportation network and the biggest airport in the region. Even if you visit Apulia because of the world-famous Trulli or the picturesque and calm coastal towns, you should not just rush to your next stop;  take some time so explore Bari!

One of the first stops as a visitor is definitely the big street in the center of the city, Via Sparano da Bari. It is a pedestrian zone with many stores, from luxurious brands to affordable fashion chains and exclusive little Italian shops. There are numerous charming cafes with seats in the middle of the street, making it the perfect place to indulge on local sweets while observing the busy street life. Also keep your eyes open and look around, as the architecture is an interesting mix between typical Italian, baroque, byzantine and modern architectural style. 

If you need a break from the busy big city flair, you can either stroll along the beautiful sea promenade and historical port or visit “Bari Vecchia”, the historical old town of Bari. Both are just a few walking minutes from the modern center of the city. The historical center of Bari has the typical Italian style, that so many visitors love. Narrow cobblestone streets, colorful balconies and inviting, authentic restaurants are all over Bari Vecchia. When you explore the old town, you should definitely try the most popular street food in bari the “focaccia barese”. It is like a fluffy pizza dough, topped with tomatoes and olives – super delicious and perfect for all bread and pizza lovers.

Two must-sees in the biggest city of the region are the Basilica San Nicola and the Cattedrale di San Sabino, both located in the historical center. They are both impressive cathedrals, famous pilgrim spots and historical sights of major importance.

If you visit Bari in the summer months, you can even go for a swim directly in the city. Bari has a beautiful and sandy city beach called “Pane e Promodoro”. Especially if you don’t have a car, it is the perfect option to have a little beach getaway, directly in the city. But if you have the possibility to move freely in Apulia and are a beach lover, you should definitely make the effort to explore the Salento peninsula.
