The café Vollpenision is probably the only place in the city of Vienna where you can get an authentic full service like at your grandma’s house. May I say that the only place on earth that offers better service, and where you can feel at home even more than at mama’s hotel, is your grandma’s house, where you will never be hungry or thirsty, and you will always feel welcome. One of the coolest and cosiest stores in Vienna has built its entire philosophy and business concept around these feelings, that lots of us have. The Vollpension is a place that is more a sanctuary than a typical café bar and the only generation café in the city.

Baking grandmas

The Vollpension was opened as a part of the Vienna Design Week 2012. The idea of the Brothers Stitch was to answer the question: Where is the best pastry in the city? The answer was: “at Grandma’s and Aunt’s”. So, they have started the Vollpension as a pilot project to offer the citizens of Vienna the best pastry. The concept is very simple: older ladies are preparing typical grandma dishes. Whether the guglhupfs, buchteln, cakes or biscuits, you can all find it here. The offer of cakes changes constantly. About 15 grandmas work and bake here, offering their old family recipes to the guests.

During the week, there are some hot entrées, snacks and cakes. At weekends, you can have a brunch that consists of sausages and cheese platter, egg dishes, vegetables, jams and spreads. There are cereals, yogurt, rice pudding, various cakes and home-made bread. Filter coffee, tea and juices are included in the price. Everything is prepared freshly in front of the eyes and noses of guests.

Grandma’s house

The interior of the store is not everyone’s cup of tea. It is very kitschy, with colourful flea-market trinkets but with very comfortable couches and armchairs. The ornate lampshades, crochet doilies and matching pictures transform the space into a huge old-fashioned living room, like a typical grandma’s house. However, everything has been arranged with a lot of attention. It all fits together from dishes, to interior and service. This café is located in the Vienna’s 4th district, not far away from different metro lines and Vienna’s most famous market - Naschmarkt.
