In the territory of Armenia, there are some mines that contain salt. Usually, these mines are not open-pit but below the ground, which gives an opportunity to build the mini underground clinics where the healing power of natural salts can be used through halotherapy. In this article, I will tell you how the salt can heal diseases, and where to find the mines with salt rooms in Armenia.

The term “halotherapy” comes from word “hals” that means salt in Greek. The salt is considered to be anti-bacterial, mucolytic and anti-inflammatory. The halotherapy uses the salt or its vapor to treat the respiratory ailments, skin irritations, and combat mental lethargy. It has been confirmed that these treatements are good for people who suffer from asthma, various chronic respiratory diseases, allergies, ear Infections, coughs and colds, many skin problems, as well as stress and depression. It also helps to restore energy, mental alertness and overall sense of well-being.

Avan salt plant (Republican Speleological Therapeutic Center)

In 1987, in Avan, one of the towns of Yerevan, started to operate the salt mine. They get the ore, then theyprocess it, and as a result, we get a white and clean salt to use at home. But even the unprocessed salt is not a useless thing. The salt mine of Avan is located around 230 meters below the surface. Here, in this underground, there is a small clinic, that has started to operate around two decades ago. Their patients are mainly the people who suffer from asthma and allergies. Here are also conducted some prophylactic treatement, as well as the procedures to restore the immune system. It's not something impressive, just the rooms with salt walls and beds. Here the main doctor is the salt mine itself.

Another place that you can visit for the salt therapies is Halo center Salzgrotte that is an exclusive distributor of salt from the German company Aeromed-Genesung GmbH in Armenia. The center is located in Yerevan. It’s not in a salt mine, but an artificial microclimate of the underground salt hospital is created for the patients.
