Summer finally came to our yards and Vilnius as well. Every single street is full of locals and tourists, and the city is very alive. All the cafeterias and small pubs are occupied by laughing and happy people. However, Vilnius has a lot of secrets, and sometimes, you can accidentally turn the wrong corner and voilà - in front of your eyes dozens of the best chefs cooking the best food in Vilnius. Those chefs are gathering in one place to spread the smell of grilled meat, vegetables and waffles. They are diffusing not only smells but the love as well. So, let me explain you what mean those whispers when you hear the locals saying “Let’s go to Open Kitchen”, and where exactly in Lithuania you can find the best of tastes of summer under the open sky.
People are gathering in the Tymo market, perfectly located, in the old town, near the Užupis district. From early May till late September, here takes place the biggest street food festival in all the Baltics - the Open Kitchen festival. During the festival, featuring every Friday and Saturday, this market is occupied by the best food trucks, restaurants and cafes. And the most thrilling thing is that this street food festival is under the open sky. With the great idea, people are bringing not only the tasty food but the summer vibes as well - the festival is full of music, DJs, even the various exhibitions can find a place there.
In this street food festival, every person can find what he likes - from vegetarians and vegans to the passionate meat lovers - there is everything. Among the most popular ones is “Karvė ir viščiukas” (Cow and Chicken) that offers the Texas style BBQ with Jamaican jerk-style. The good news is that this restaurant also has its own place in the city, so if you miss the Open Kitchen, you always can visit them there. For the fish lovers is “Žuvų paštas” (Fish delivery), a smoked and fresh fish truck straight from the best Lithuania’s rivers and lakes. If there are people who like fresh homemade pasta and ravioli, in the “PASTA PASTA” restaurant they will find it. People who are passionate about the Spanish cuisine will be able to eat the best seafood in - “La Cocina de Jose”, a traditional Spanish restaurant. And of course, there are many more restaurants and food trucks.
The Open Kitchen is open for everyone, but if you miss this festival in Vilnius, do not worry, there is one more. Another Open Kitchen is taking place in the second biggest city of Lithuania, also called “the heart of Lithuania” - Kaunas city. In Kaunas, the Open Kitchen is happening every Thursday from 11:30 AM to 10:00 PM in Nemunas islet.
The Tymo market is also works on Thursdays (10:00 AM - 4.00 PM) and on Saturdays ( 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM), and there you can find various ecological products straight from the hands of the farmers. From honey and fresh berries to the handcrafts - this unique and a small market finds a place in everyone's heart.
