The Opera was established in 1933 by the decision of the Government, and the construction was done under the guidance of architect Alexsander Tamanyan, who was the architect of the city of Yerevan as well. The theatre is named after Alexsander Spendiarian, an Armenian music composer, conductor and the founder of Armenian national symphonic music. The Opera’s opening was made by his “Almast” opera. On the list of their performances, there were and are the operas Anoush and Arshak, as well as the ballets called Gayane and Spartacus, but also the compositions of different composers.

The Theater has a unique place in Armenia's cultural life, as what one can see on the stage is a high-quality work performed by people who have many times proved to their audience to be the professionals of their job. In their list, you can always find local and international masterpieces. Each time you visit the Theater you leave it full of new emotions and feelings. Beyond the grey walls of the Theater you will find music and sounds that will warm up your heart, brighten your day. The Armenian ballet and opera is also presented beyond the borders of Armenia, and it became much liked also by the international audience. From time to time, the Opera and Ballet Theater also hosts some world-known opera and ballet artists.

Besides the opera and ballet, sometimes here are held the concerts, there that are not less interesting. You can always check the list of concerts on their website, and if there is something that interests you, the tickets are available online or you can just buy it from the opera building.

The territory of the Theater is almost always crowded. People like to walk around it in the evenings or just to take their kids to play in its yard, where they can find a lot of entertaining things for them. Because it is located in the city center, you won't need to walk long to get to the other well-known parts of Yerevan, such as the Cascade and the Republic Square.
