The city of Győr, after Budapest and Sopron, is the third richest city in Hungary in terms of the number of tourist attractions. With a poetic exaggeration, all the buildings situated in the town center are individual monuments, and this is what makes me say that getting a culture shock in Győr is almost inevitable. It's also one of the most important cities economically, given the fact that it is right next to the Slovakian border, and 30 mins by drive from the Austrian. Besides, if you love sports, Győr will not leave you in disappointment, as it has always had multiple first league teams. Therefore, when you are staying here, there is a really good chance that you can watch a game of your type somewhere since Győr is in love with sports. Although I can’t show you everything about the city in one single article, because it would demand a book, I will let you know about the best activities, that you can’t miss.

First of all, let’s see what I exactly mean by culture shock. When you visit Győr and go to the downtown, I assure you, it will be a jaw-dropping experience.

Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady

The Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady in Győr is the main church of the area. It stands on the Baptist Hill in the oldest part of the city, at the confluence of Rába and Danube. Apart from the Bishop's Castle, it is the oldest and most important monument in the city. Here, one of Hungary's most important national relics, Saint László's hermitage is preserved.

Bishops Castle and Episcopal Palace

The Bishops Castle and Episcopal Palace is located in the historical center of Győr, at the junction of the Mosoni-Danube and Rába rivers. This is the most significant ancient building of the city, also the residence of the current Bishop of Győr.

Champions League-winner team in Győr

Győr has a great tradition and excellent abilities in the field of competitive sports. From bodybuilding to football and water sports, martial arts, you can find every sport and do not forget about dance or leisure sports either, such as bowling, go-kart or darts. I have to mention the famous football club of Győr, Győri ETO football club, which is one of the most successful sports teams of Hungary. If you follow the sports news, I am sure you have already heard of the four-time Champions League-winner Győri Audi ETO KC, which is one of the best women handball clubs around the world. CMB Cargo Uni Győr is a Euroleague attendant women basketball team, which also has great achievements. Further proof of my statement that Győr is in love with sports is the fact that the Youth Olympic Games and the European Youth Championship were both held in Győr in 2018.

As I mentioned above, I could be writing about Győr for a week really, and I’m sure, even after that, there will still be something I missed. Nevertheless, my point is that if you come to Hungary, I really recommend you to visit the country's west side, including Győr too. In this case, you will firmly increase your chances of getting a culture shock, which is one the best things about travelling.
